Northeast District police chief ACP Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said in the 4am incident, the suspect refused to stop his motorcycle during the roadblock operation and hit SSPDRM members, one of whom was a woman.

“The incident occurred during an operation after the New Year’s celebration.

“During the operation, a group of motorcyclists were stopped for inspection when all of a sudden, one motorcyclist rammed into the SSPDRM members while attempting to escape from the roadblock operation,” he said after visiting the injured members who received treatment at the Penang Hospital here.

Mior Faridalathrash said Oon Beow Chong, 43, received treatment for a fracture in his left leg and right hand besides other body injuries.

Oon was however, reported to be in stable condition after undergoing surgery.

Another victim, Wan Norhushafarizan Md Husain, 30, injured her right leg, left knee and right hand, while Muhammad Rushdey Rosli, 23, sustained minor injuries.

Mior Faridalathrash said the motorcyclist and the pillion rider, both from Bayan Lepas, aged 19 and 21 respectively, were later arrested to facilitate investigations.

Initial investigations revealed that the motorcyclist was holding an “L” licence but was carrying a pillion rider which was against the law. — BERNAMA
